, who have an unusual apartment in new york city. >> hello, welcome to our home in new york. we live in manhattan, on 57th street. this is my wife elizabeth. we have been together for 53 years. as you can see from the various items in the apartment, we enjoy travelling all over the world. most of it was obviously on business. we lived in the philippines for ten years, where i found the most important treasure in our apartment, my wife elizabeth. this tankard we bought in germany, actually, in baden- baden. it's a wonderful example of ivory carving. it is seldom that one can find such a large tusk carved in such deep relief this is my grandson, a picture which was taken during a chess- tournament in 2005. he started to learn playing chess on this table. he has done really well and attended many different tournaments. when i come out of my living room, i have a wonderful view of manhattan. in spite of the wonderful different parts we saw in the world, there is no other place where we would like to live except in new york it was nice that you were able to visit us and spent a little tim

the dollar will go against the yen. the u.s. currency reached the upper 84-yen level in new york for the first time in 20 months. the dollar hit 84.95 yen at one stage on monday in new york. investors bought the dollar against the yen after liberal democratic party leader shinzo abe said his new government may reach an agreement with japan's central bank on an inflation target. there is speculation the central bank may come under further pressure for monetary easing measures. the dollar/yen is currently trading at 84.82 to 85. >> catherine, the incoming leader abe has even mentioned revising the bank of japan law which adds more pressure onto the central bank of japan. now, a bit of background, the boj decided last week to extend its asset purchase program by 10 trillion yen, but many investors think the bank needs to do more, still. let's go to ramin mellegard who is at the tokyo stock exchange to get a check on how all of this is affecting tokyo markets. ramin, good morning. >> good morning to you. markets really keeping a close eye on the weaker yen here, and if it's going to

market. for that we go to ramin mellegard at the new york stock exchange. the election brought big changes. what's happening there, ramin? >> yes, you've gone through some of the currency levels but let's have a look at the opening levels for the nikkei and the topix for december 16. very big gain for the nikkei, 9,888. it did break to 9,500 for a very brief time. we're still up above 1.5%. we've seen the nikkei rise up above a thousand points since the election in mid-november. many are betting we could see 10,000. we're just over 100 points off that. let's not forget there are a couple key issues which may cause some bumps in the road. let's not forget japan is in a technical recession and the reports, which we covered, did show a big drop in the number for the last quarter reflecting the economy's domestic picture. it was down at minus 12 compared to minus 3 the previous quarter, you can see there. also a lot of market observers in the wider picture of the global stock markets are looking at the u.s., and if there's no resolution there to the u.s. fiscal cliff, that could also b

that threat still is going to linger. farther towards the north, you will see the freezing rain. in new york, gusts up to 50 kilometers per hour. far away from the ocean, that's where you will see the freezing rain risk. power lines could be falling down once you get accumulation on top of them. over the past several days, snow extending toward the west. if you're curious on who actually had a white christmas out here, this is the snow depth in the united states and canada. you can see much of northern half of the u.s. toward canada, you have snow on the ground. actually, into some of the higher elevations in the rockies, 50 to 100 millimeters, isolated areas will see more than that. really widespread snowfall has been seen here and that's a really quick way to look at it. and it will stay on the ground. why? cold air diving in from the north. houston, you were seeing a high at mid-20s, now 8 on your wednesday. as we take a look over toward europe, continuing to see a low-pressure system moving across the british isles. bringing us heavy rain and icing conditions in portions of the uk. seein

at the moment. chicago, 19 degrees. 24 in oklahoma city. 19 for you in d.c. with 16 in new york city. all right. let's go now to europe. a very messy picture here. the western locations are starting to see a low and frontal system moving through. that's going to be producing plenty of precipitation. and a lot of it is going to be snow here, as well. the same goes for the east. we've got a couple of lows here, one moving through the eastern mediterranean coming in to turkey. that will be bringing some severe thunderstorms and snow for the northern balkans. and the reason is really rapid drop in temperatures into wednesday. look at where the jet stream is moving all way down to the south here, letting all of that frigid air just fall in, and we will be seeing a drop of maybe about five degrees in london, between monday and tuesday, athens also dropping by five degrees down to 13 for the high on your wednesday. here's your extended forecast. ♪ >>> we'll be back with more updates in 30 minutes. i'm gene otani in tokyo. from all of us here at nhk world, thanks for join us. have a great day whereve
